UWA Superstars: "J-Dogg" Johnny Gunn

Background: The UWA's original bad boy, "J-Dogg" Johnny Gunn's career has been the proverbiafgl rollar coaster ride. The first wrestler to appear on UWA television, the self-professed "D-Generate King" spent early days embroiled in conflict with Panther, his longtime rival and former tag team partner, over the promotion's top spot. The two did battle in the main event of UWA's first televised show, a bout that ended in a no contest after Vader, under the instruction of Francine, interfered and attacked both men.

Possessing numerous contacts with international talent, Francine promised to build an Enterprise that would rule the UWA with an iron fist. The first major success of this Enterprise came at the inaugural Breakin' The Rulz pay-per-view event, during which Francine aided J-Dogg in winning the tournament to crown the first-ever Universal Champion. The shocking Gunn-Francine union made J-Dogg the promotion's public enemy #1, and he would spend the bulk of the next three months dodging the challenges of Panther, Lightning, and Vader, all of whom lost a championship opportunity thanks to the couple's duplicity.

Panther finally caught up with Gunn at 2003's Apocalypse Now PPV, ending J-Dogg's Championship reign in a epic title match. A return bout between the two, which took place at Game Time 2004, was an epic Hell in the Cell encounter that was voted Match of the Year by the UWA's faithful. J-Dogg fought long and hard, but in the end failed to overcome his hated rival.

Gunn's losses to Panther only made him more driven to regain the Universal Championship, yet despite his best efforts, he always came up short. The relationship between he and Francine eventually soured, and Gunn was booted out of the Enterprise. J-Dogg would remain a thorn in the side of the Francine-led faction for the bulk of the next year, finally overcoming Ice Cube, the new face of the Enterprise, at Breakin' the Rulz 2005 to effectively end the feud.

Apocalypse Now 2005 would see Gunn challenging for Championship gold yet again, ironically standing side-by-side with the man who took the title away from him. J-Dogg and Panther put their differences aside to battle CM Punk and Kid Kash for the Tag Team Championship. The two took the Champions to the limit in what was ultimately a losing effort. Eager to show the world that they were still on top of their game, Gunn and Panther challenged the duo to a rematch, and at Total Annihilation 2006 won the titles, thus beginning one of the most memorable runs in UWA history.

Dubbed the "Tag Team Renaissance" by the UWA fanbase, Panther's and Gunn's title reign redefined the Tag Team Division as the pairing put on a seemingly endless string of high-quality matches. The defining moment of this run came at Game Time 2006, where Panther and Gunn successfully defended their titles in a Triple Threat Ladder Match against the team of Spanky and Paul London and the former Champions CM Punk and Kid Kash. At the time, the match was heralded as the greatest in the UWA's 3-year history.

Like all good things, the Panther/J-Dogg partnership came to an end when the two UWA pillars decided to rededicate themselves to regaining the Universal Championship. Their relationship strained after Panther won the 2006 Patriot Gamez tournament, earning the Championship shot at that year's Hell on Earth. Consumed by jealousy as well as the belief that fans preferred Panther to himself, J-Dogg betrayed Panther just prior to the Hell on Earth PPV, sending shockwaves around the world.

Since then, J-Dogg has been more ruthless than ever, stooping to any depth necessary to overcome whatever obstacles are in his path. Nowhere is this more was this more evident than in September 2006 when he used a pair of pliers to viciously break the fingers of Lightning. With Michael Shane by his side as his unruly understudy, J-Dogg looks to remain one of the UWA's top villians for the foreseeable future.
